Chapter Eleven

“Your robe, Master O’Connor.” A young, full-lipped brunette woman wearing the royal robe stood in the doorway smiling, taking in his naked body. Whit took the robe from her while barking at her to leave. She obeyed, quickly closing the door behind her, and he turned while facing me and pulled his robe over his head. I turned away at the sound, angry and sickened, as the motion of his robe slightly dusted the ground as he walked up behind me. He reached for my hand as the blood dripped from his fingertips, and I pulled away. With a heavy sigh, he positioned himself in front of me. I stared straight at the tainted ground where the sword still lay, refusing to look at him as his dark-blue robe flowed over in small waves onto mine.

The smell of sweat and blood overpowered the incense of the man I wanted him to be. “You need to come with me.” I drew in a deep breath as I stood my ground. “You need to come with me,” he repeated more firmly. “Doing so on your own two feet and of your own will is preferred over the other methods. Cami, this is the only way you will leave this place alive. The Council will not let either of us leave if they do not think you are somewhat willing to be here.”

What choice did I have? There was no alternative. He opened the door, and I followed him back into the same suffocating cave we had come from. Many forms peered from underneath their hooded robes as they spoke in hushed tones that seemed to oscillate from all directions. Only the swish of our robes and steps echoing sounded. My mind, will, emotions, and heart were depleted by the time we made it to where the flickering light gave way to the same cavern where Whit beheaded his own mother.

“Glad to see all is well,” the master’s voice boomed with glee, and the shadows shifted to their twisted demonic forms.

I had not noticed until we stood before him that demons, bishops, and a couple of women, who seemed to be in some sort of bondage or slavery, had followed us like a small devoted entourage in awe of Whit’s presence. “What an exciting evening this has been.” The master’s hollow of where his eyes should occupy seemed to glint with glee.

“Let’s finish this.” Whit bowed his head slightly and then stood in front of me once more as he spoke. “I have covenanted with this woman today, on her twenty-first year, giving her my pledge of my unyielding love and devotion in the name of the Rite. I sealed it in blood from my own flesh as you can see. Do you, sir, still agree to hold her completely harmless from now until the end of time and recognize her as my eternal covenanted wife?”

“Bishop O’Connor, I do on behalf of the Rite vow to do all of that and even vow to go beyond this duty to protect and serve her as your beloved wife in covenant.
